Presented by Andrew M. Watsky, Professor, Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University. On the island of Chikubushima stands a small jewel-like building commissioned by a ruling warrior family during the Momoyama period. Originally constructed in Kyoto, where it stood for a decade, the building was relocated to the island, transforming its function and meaning. Richly ornamented with polychrome paintings, black-and-gold lacquer, relief wood carvings, and metalwork, the building comprises the most fully realized ensemble of decoration surviving from the period. The annual Nelson I. Wu lecture on Asian art and culture, which honors the memory of the late Dr. Wu, is jointly sponsored by the Saint Louis Art Museum and Washington University in St. Louis. Auditorium. Free.

Dancing will be taken to new heights on September 27 as Grand Center produces its second annual "Dancing in the Street" festival. Serving as a celebration for the opening of the fall arts season, Grand Center's "Dancing in the Street" festival will be filled with juried performances from approximately 45 dance companies consisting of more than 570 dancers performing throughout the district on four outdoor stages. In addition, the UK group "Neighbourhood Watch Stilts International" (NWSI) will headline. The event will take place from noon to 9 p.m. and is free to the public. In keeping with its goal to provide dazzling entertainment, Grand Center plans to introduce Neighbourhood Watch Stilts International (NWSI) from New Castle Upon Tyne, England - a first to St. Louis. In addition, NWSI is bringing five of their "Les Oiseaux de Lux"
monochromatic bird costumes and stilt performers, who have dazzled audiences in more than 36 countries around the world. With their fantastic costumes and enchanting ever changing performances that defy description, NWSI performances have been described as "stunning spectators with their extraordinary explosion of color and movement." Action/Abstraction" proposes a fresh look at the painting and sculpture that transformed the art world in the years following World War II
––a period when abstraction emerged as a dominant means of artistic expression. Key works by such artists as Helen Frankenthaler, Arshile Gorky, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, Jasper Johns, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Norman Lewis, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Ad Reinhardt, David Smith, Frank Stella, and Clyfford still represent a carefully chosen group of 50 examples from major institutions and collections throughout the U.S. and abroad. Against a background of Cold War politics, rising mass culture, and growing consumerism, critic Harold Rosenberg championed the concept of action (the creative act of the artist) versus the ideal purity of a non-representational aesthetic defended by Clement Greenberg. "Action/Abstraction" re-examines how these critics' theories vied with each other and with the intentions of the artists––who nevertheless remained keenly aware of the critics' perspectives and were often influenced by them. Curated in St. Louis by Charlotte Eyerman, curator of modern and contemporary art, "Action/Abstraction: Pollock, de Kooning, and American Art, 19401976," has been organized by The Jewish Museum, New York in collaboration with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo and the Saint Louis Art Museum. Leadership support has been provided by the Weissman Family Foundation, The National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency, and the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation. The exhibition is sponsored by the Jerome L. Greene Foundation. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this exhibition do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities. "Action/Abstraction: Pollock, de Kooning, and American Art, 19401976" will be on view in the Main Exhibition Galleries. Admission to the exhibition is $6 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, $4 for children 6 to 12, free for children younger than 6 and includes an iPod multimedia tour. The iPod multimedia tour is available to visitors 12 and older. A major credit card is required. The iPod tour is $2 on Fridays when the exhibition is free and free to members every day. "Loop Web" combines choreographed sound; a fabricated, three-dimensional, multimedia structure; and a specifically targeted light-projection system that together create
in the artist’s words—"a unified experience of interconnectivity." Smith’s art aims to model the world’s structure, distilling it to the most essential and fundamental forms. The artist cites as inspiration the ancient philosopher Cicero’s dictum that, "Art is born of the observation and investigation of nature." Smith characterizes his work as a "metamorphic complex interaction model" such as an ecosystem or a mathematical equation. He clarifies, "I hope to attain a level of complexity that equates with that of worldly systems like the stock market, an ecosystem or a biological cell." The multimedia sculptural installation will be a network inspired by those that exist in the functioning world. The sculpture is based on the intracellular transport mechanism used by all cells. Its form resonates with the cell’s internal skeleton and evokes the dynamic movement of this fundamental building block of all life forms. Bill Smith’s installation lends a new dimension to the New Media Series, which has never before incorporated a three-dimensional installation. His installation extends the boundaries of traditional distinctions between sculpture and new media. Bill Smith lives and works in the St. Louis metropolitan area. "Loop Web" will be on view in Gallery 301 from October 31, 2008 through January 4, 2009. This installation of the New Media Series was curated by Charlotte Eyerman, curator of modern and contemporary art. Free. For more information, call 314.721.0072 or visit www.slam.org.
